Storyline: 5 Stars
I loved this book. Recently I have become really skeptical of books that have become really popular and are hyped up all over the media, but I think this one actually lived up to the hype. I’m really enjoying the genre of mystery that is so much more than a mystery. Although on the back cover the description talks about a mstery, the book is about relationships, growing up, difference in life between rich and poor, and so much more. The crux of the book is showing the reader that rich or poor, the relationships are what make a life worth living.
There were a lot of point of views and timeline jumps. I enjoyed them and appreciated the mystery that it held, but at times I was looking back at previous chapters to remember when things had happened compared to what I was currently reading. It was somewhat confusing, but if a reader does not mind looking back a few times throughout the read, it was manageable.
There was so many great things about this book. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it was really great in my opinion.
Parental Guidance: 70% Recommend
I would recommend this book 70% of the time. The language was mostly mild, but occasionally there was an “f” word which is main reason why I took marks off the book. They were infrequent, but they were there.
There was not much romance in the book, although there were some suggested intimacy between a few characters, although the book never was descriptive about it. It was glossed over fairly quickly. There was nothing that made me uncomfortable while reading.
There was some violence, but not graphic and it was not much. There was a serial killer character in the book that was kind of disgusting, but it was not unbareable.

*Spoilers Ahead*
As I started reading, I was fairly sure that Alice had something to do with Bear’s disappearance. Her memory was not there and her mind was sort of crazy. I figured that she had to do with something, but I was not sure until the end.
I appreciated that there were so many misdirections. I did not think that Bear or Barbara were murdered at any point, but I did think something sketchy had happened. I honestly was having a hard time imaginging any of them having foul play. Vic was too kind, Peter II and III were way to excited to have a boy to inherit their land, Alice loved Bear, and I did not think the serial killer would harm him. It made sense what happened in the end.
I was slightly disappointed with Barbara’s ending. I wanted something more interesting. I’m also wondering how or why the Van Laar’s didn’t know about the secret island that Barbara left to. I am also confused why Barbara made the drastic change of trying to live there instead of going to school and leaving when she was eighteen.
I loved Judyta. I think she was my favorite character!
