Storyline: 3 Stars

Modern mystery books are always interesting. They are written different than a good old-fashioned Agatha Christie book and that can be good or bad.

The good part of this book was that I wanted to keep reading. I was hooked almost right away, and I read through it fast. It was intriguing, and I kept wanting to know more. If you want a page turner, this book will definitely be that. It is engaging and you will want to find out what happens.

The bad is that the ending was a disappointment. I won’t go into details, but there were so many unbelievable parts at the end that made no sense. Then once I figured out the ending, I looked through the rest of the book and realized that the storyline leading up to the climax did not make sense considering what had actually happened. It was an unfortunate reveal.

Parental Guidance: 55% Recommend

I would recommend this book 65% of the time. With the book being a mystery, there is some violence described. I would not say it is explicit, but it was still there.

The main reason for the decrease in percentage was the language and rainbow characters. There were some “f” words, and although they were not frequent, they were used enough throughout the book. There was more swearing as well. In a away it made sense because it helped characterize the different characters, but that is something to be aware of. The rainbow characters were not in your face, but they were there.

*Spoilers Ahead*

Although the book was not predictable, it was also unbelievable in the end.

How would the police not know that Madeline did not kill herself? The knife would was not even inflicted in a manner that was made to seem like it was suicide. Also, no one at all saw Bea and Madeline together? That seems odd.

Second, how was the girl just completely content living in the attic for years. It seemed that she did not even try to escape, which she probably could have if she had tried since apparently Bea had been a super nice caretaker of her. And what was Bea’s plan? Keep her there forever?

And Cassandra and Marty . . . whatever happened to them? Cassandra was super mad at Madeline, and then she disappears and suddenly she’s willing to work with Kate to find out what happened? It makes no sense. I’m also assuming that the people she saw were Bea and Madeline.

The police lady . . . there is no way just one police officer is privy to the DNA test information, especially with such a huge case! That was ridiculous. I also did not love that we did not get much closure on Carly; she was the most interesting character in the whole story.

Basically, I liked 80% of the book. It was only towards the end when things started falling apart as I realized that what had happened made no sense in the context of the rest of the book.
