Storyline: 3 Stars
Basically if you have ever read any fantasy book that has come out in the last ten years, you have already read this book. Not exactly, but there was not really anything new. I probably would have had a different take on the book if I had never read fantasy or was just beginning to read in the genre, but so much about it was repetitive when compared to the many other fantasy books that are out there, especially the romantasy category.
The romance was mediocre; it did not make much sense why there was that at all. I definitely wish that there either would have been no romance or that it would have been a slow burn. They got together way too fast where it did not make much sense, and they barely knew each other. I know that is the trend in romantasy these days, but it really makes me tune out the romance because something that happens that fast is just not as impactful or good.
The storyline was predictable for someone that has read a lot of fantasy. I wasn’t really surprised by any of the “twists” that were embedded in the book. Oh well, at least it did not take me long to read.
Parental Guidance: 55% Recommend
I would recommend this book 55% of the time. It was one of those that was mostly clean, and then random things would be thrown in there to make it more “adult” I guess. It did not really make sense. For example, a few “f” words were used, but they were so random and infrequent and the book would honestly have been better without them because the world had their own version of “swearing”. It seemed pointless.
At first I did not think there was going to be any inappropriate intimate scenes because there was not really a romance, and then randomly one happened! It made no sense for the plot really. It was only a couple pages so it was easily skippable, but that would be something to be aware of. That is where the majority of the percentage points were taken off.

*Spoilers Ahead*
As I said above, if you have read a romantasy book in the last years, you’ve basically read this one. It was very underwhelming. It felt like a composite of some of the fantasy books that I actually really enjoy. There was nothing unique about it. Another magic deck of cards, another magic mist, another book where anyone that has magic is hunted down and killed. It was mediocre.
I might read the sequel just to finish it up, but I would have been fine not reading this book.
