Storyline: 4 Stars

I read this for my book club, and we had never heard of this book before searching for it on Goodreads. We pretty much went in blind, and I was pleasantly surprised. Sometimes it is good to go off the normal path and not read all the the popular books on social media. The book was short and impactful in the amount of pages that it had.

There definitely was a “twist” that was somewhat predictable at the end, but it was still interesting to read. I still didn’t completely understand how the ending happened which occurred in the past, but there are always going to be some flaws in a book. Overall, it was a good book.

I’m still unsure when the book is supposed to take place, but it seems to be in the not so distant future. I would say that the world did not seem to progress as I thought it would that far into the future and there was not as much world building , but it was not too disruptive to the story.

Parental Guidance: 80% Recommend

I would recommend this book 80%. There was one sort of violent incident, but it was really short and not explicit at all. There was implied intimacy between a married couple, but nothing explicit.

The main thing to watch for is the language. There were not a crazy number of swear words throughout the book, but there were definitely swear words throughout, including some instances of the “f” bomb. Outside of the langauge, the book was pretty mild.

*Spoilers Ahead*

This book was a good read. It was heartwarming, but not cheesy. It was a good combination of feel good and important.

As mentioned before, the biggest disappointment I had was the world building in the story. We get the impresison that all the animals are dying, but outside of that, our world is pretty much the exact same. I am not sure if this is supposed to take place in the future or if it’s an alternative reality of today. I would have appreciated some more world building, but since the book was short, there was not much time for that. Overall, it didn’t take away from the story much, I just would have appreciated more world building because the parts that I did see were interesting.

The ending was predictable. Right away when I found out that Franny had been in jail I knew that Naill was dead. There was a lot of tells, including the letters not sent, not talking about him, and doing the thing that he wanted to (chasing the terns). However, it was still impactful. Honestly, I thought that she had strangled him in his sleep after all those close instances, but the car accident was a little bit of a surprise.
