Romance

There were a few couples in the book with relationships. There was mention of sex, but there were no scenes alluding to it. Some characters kissed, but nothing more than that. The romance was not detailed and it was written more as a summary like in the back of a book.

Violence

There were a few scenes of violence, including a few shootings that resulted in the deaths of some characters. Like the romance, many of the scenes that imply violence are described like they would be in a newspaper and not necessarily in detail.

Language

There was some harsh language, including “F***”. The instances of the word were not frequent, but there were probably a dozen times when the word was used, along with some other swear words.

Drugs and Alcohol

There were no drugs or alcohol throughout the book except some scenes where characters were at restaurants and potentially drinking alcohol.

Diversity

There was a wide array of characters. One of the main characters was gay and later in the book married their partner. There were several different men and women main characters with different backgrounds and with different ages. The story did not just follow one character.

Demographic

The reading was easy, and the content was mild. I would suggest the book to anyone in high school or older.

I thought that The Measure was just okay. It was not my favorite book, but the idea was intriguing. I think the reason that it was not my favorite was that I did not feel attached to any of the characters. Their stories were moving, but with the POV constantly switching between different characters, it was hard to understand any of them in depth.

The plot and idea were interesting. The idea of everyone having the opportunity to know how long they will live was intriguing, and I think the author did a good job of showing what the world could potentially look like if that happened. However, I felt that a lot of agenda was being pushed through the book. It felt like the whole thing was a metaphor for other social justice issues. While reading it I wanted to know more about the plot, the idea, and the characters, but instead, I felt like current issues were thrown in my face. I understand some people might appreciate that, but I was more interested in reading a good story.

I would say that The Measure may not be the best book to read. It was not necessarily the worst and I have read a lot worse, but I was expecting more, and I did not want to read about so much agenda. Read it at your own risk.
