Storyline: 5 Stars

I first read the Lunar Chronicles when I was in high school and they first came out. Ten years later, and they are just as magical as before! They are lighthearted and fun science fiction books meant for young adults, but there are still important themes throughout the books such as racism, generational abuse, and many other themes that can be learned from.

Marissa Meyer is truly the master of fairytale retellings. I have read some others, but none compare to her. I don’ t know many other authors that can combine fairytales and science fiction into an epic fiction series. It is so cool to see all the different fictional characters’ stories connect and intertwine together. These books are meant for young adults, so of course the content is more easy going and not quite as serious, but oh is it fun!

Don’t get me started on all the romances and characters . . . I absolutely love how Meyer crafts four unique men and four unique women and pours different character traits into each one. There are so many authors that write bland characters, or all the characters have the same personality, but that is not the case at all with Meyer’s series. Each character is different and unique and it makes for a wonderful story!

Parental Guidance: 80% Recommend

I would recommend this book 80% of the time. It is a very clean book, clearly meant for young adults. There are a few things to note that the book contains which might make this a book to read in middle school or high school and not earlier.

There is kissing, and in one of the books, relations are implied through pregnancy and marriage, although nothing is shown. There are some bad words, but they are far and few between. You will not see anything worse than d*mn in these books. There is violence, as the series is an epic science fiction. There is attempted murder and burnings, which the reader should be aware of. However, the violence is not overly graphic.

*Spoilers Ahead*

I LOVE the Lunar Chronicles. I have since I first started reading them. I remember I read Winter on a drive to Michigan for a college visit to Michigan State, and I read it in the ride there. All in a day! I did not read the series as fast this time, but I actually think that gave me time to obsorb everything that happened.

When I first read the series, I was a major Cinder/Kai and Scarlet/Wolf fan. Espeically Scarlet/Wolf. I guess I had a thin for bad, scary boys at the time. In my rereading, I found myself fixating on Cress/Thorne and Winter/Jacin a lot more in this series. They are more unique, and less love at first sight types of stories. I especially loved Thorne’s inability to flirt with Cress when he could with every other girl, and the protectiveness that Jacin had for Winter and his ability to hide his emotions for her sake. Loved it all!

Maybe this series isn’t for you, but it’s one of my all-time favorites!
