Storyline: 4 Stars

I read this book for book club, and to be honest, I was a little disappointed. I thought that the idea and characters were really cool and interesting, but I thought it was a poor execution of the overall idea. There were so many puzzles and moving parts that did not connect or make sense to someone who doesn’t have a history or math doctorate. I don’t mind stories that have information that the average person may not understand, but I expect the author to explain some of those things to the reader. That did not happen here. A very complex, confusing topic would be briefly talked about, the characters would figure it out, and then it would never be mentioned again. There was nothing for the reader to figure out because there was no real hints at the puzzles, at least not hints that 99% of the population would be able to understand.

Maybe I was just too dumb for this series.

Parental Guidance: 55% Recommend

The language was mild, with a few swear words here and there that I think are more so there for the shocking effect. There was not any in-depth appropriate scenes, only instances where intimacy was hinted at or implied. There was violence, but it happened quickly and I would not describe it as violence.

Most of the 45% that I took off was due to a few things in the categories above and because there were rainbow characters and they were pretty involved in the storyline.

*Spoilers Ahead*

Was I really just dumb while reading this book? Zofia knew all the math and Enrique knew all the history, but to be honest none of it made any sense to me. I just had to sit back and take their word for it. I think that was what bothered me most. There were no hints for the reader to slowly figure out the puzzle, or even a throughline of the puzzles throughout the book that would keep them connected and more interesting. It was just a bunch of random information that Zofia and Enrique threw out, andn some of the history was not even accurate because it was in a fantasy world (I’m looking at you Tower of Babel).

The characters were fine, but at the end of the series, I didn’t even understand the point. I didn’t get the point of going to the Temple. I didn’t get why everything happened the way it happened in the Temple, and why Severin’s entire line said that going to the Temple made gods when it actually did not. Also, why was Severin not the true heir to his House? In the first book they made it seem like there was going to be a huge reveal, but there really was not. I don’t understand why he was not the heir.
