The Safe Pages Rating

I read one Colleen Hoover book, It Ends With Us, and it was difficult to read. I had to skip a third of the book because of the graphic content. In retrospect, I should have done more research on the book, but I was seeing so many young readers read it that I thought it would be okay. It was difficult to stay in the storyline because of the romance or “smut” (the popular term for graphic sexual content) that was in the book. In the end, I threw the book in the garbage because I did not want to finish and I did not want anyone to think I had read it.

I cannot speak on every Colleen Hoover book because I only read one of them, but after reading online reviews, I believe that most of her books are similar. There are graphic scenes, abuse relationships, cheating, and a lot of other unhealthy romance scenarios. I will not be reading anymore of her books because I do not want to read the type of scenes that were in It Ends With Us. There are so many books that have better storylines that do not rely on graphic content for a “plot” that are available. If an individual likes romance, there are many other great books with healthy romance. These books with graphic content became popular because a lot of people, especially women, like reading that sort of content. As a Christian, we should run from that content.

If I were a parent, I would discourage my children from reading Colleen Hoover books, even though they are popular. If I was an adult, I would avoid these books and read one of the many other fantastic books that are around. Colleen Hoover may be popular, but she does not pass as a safe read.
