There were no detailed scenes of romance, but the main character had several relationships that resulted in one-night stands. All the main character’s love life is implied outside of a few parts with kissing.
Violence
There was not real violence in the book outside of characters on the tennis court being rough with the other players during the game. There were several sports related injuries.
Language
The book was filled with swear words. There were many instances of “F***”, “S***”, and other swear words. There were in casual conversations. If swear is a sensitive area, I would recommend not reading this book.
Drugs and Alcohol
The book had limited scenes with alcohol, although there were some celebrations that included alcohol. One of the characters was a recovering alcoholic, but there were not intense scenes with alcohol usage.
Diversity
There was a side character that identified as gay. This character naturally flowed into the story and no details of their life was described.
Demographic
Based on who enjoys this book, the audience of the book is mostly likely women 16+. I would not recommend the book to anyone younger because of the language, and if swearing is a sensitive area, the book probably is not one to be read.
The style of the writing was easy to read. It is a contemporary novel which are typically easy reads. It was not a long book and could be read in an afternoon.
Although the book did have a lot of swearing, I really enjoyed the storyline. I think those who are involved in sports at a high level would be able to relate, but the average individual could also get invested in the sporting world. I appreciated the author used Tennis terminology but introduced is naturally.
I did cry towards the end of Carrie Soto is Back. It really impacted me because the main character was able to let go of her insecurities and she realized that her sport was just a game, and winning was not essential to enjoy it. I appreciated the relationship between daughter and father, even though they had had strains in the past.
If you liked this book, I would suggest reading The Glass Castle, another spectacular memoir.
