I tried to give Emily Henry a shot. Maybe this was not the best book to start with, but I was unimpressed. I am trying to branch out and read across all the genres, including romantic comedy, but I was not impressed with this book. The characters were mostly selfish and annoying, I did not really care about the main romance, and the story was pretty boring.
Also, can we not think of any other job except literary agent? Why can’t the book lovers just be normal people that love books?
Parental Guidance: 45% Recommend
I would recommend this book 45% of the time. It was not a violent book and there were not any dark themes, but there was swearing and some inappropriate scenes that needed to be skipped while I was reading.
The “f” work was used somewhat frequently throughout the book, which was annoying. So many times it was completely unnecessary, but it was in there for the sake of being “realistic”.
The most concerning part was the romance scenes. There were a few kissing scenes that were intense that I skipped a few paragraphs over. There was a brief s*x scene that I also had to skip, lasting about a full five page chapter. It was out of blue, and unnecessary as usual.

*Spoilers Ahead*
I think I should stop reading romantic comedies. I try to branch out and read genres that are different for me, but I have not read a rom-com that I have liked yet. I wish I could find a good one!
I did not like the characters. Nora was annoying, especially since she was supposed to be mean and evil and she wasn’t really mean and evil. Then she got mad at Libby for moving. Libby made Nora leave for a month and kept all these secrets, which I don’t understand. Then we have Charles who gave his sappy backstory but honestly there was nothing interesting about him. He was described as hardcore, but we did not see that side of him at all in the book.
Was I the only one disappoitned that the characters were in the book business and not just book lovers? *sigh*. When are we going to get two regular people that just like books? Probably never because working in publishing is the trope.
Also, I didn’t think Nora and Charles were that great. Their conversations were weird, and I cannot imagine ever having conversations like that with a business colleague. Plus, I hate the trope of just using each other for pleasure when it could not lead anywhere. I know it’s common in real life too, but I don’t like it.
Lastly, I wish that there were books about how a career woman can also have a soft side and want a family. It seems like in books there are two types of women “big career” and “big family”. Those are the only options. Why can’t there be a woman who is a woman first, and the career and family part are intermixed in her life? I feel that having one or the other is not very representative of women. I work full-time as an accountant and really like my job, but I also love my family and value that. Oh well, we only get women in those two categories for now.
