Storyline: 2 Stars
This was not the book for me. For one, it was incredibly slow. I thought it was going to be a heartwarming book about past and present and younger and older people, but instead it was an incredibly boring story, and when things really did happen, they made me roll my eyes.
The main character was incredibly lame. She really did not have much of a personality in either of the timelines. She just went along with whatever happened at the time. I had no idea what she really wanted out of life or what her motivations were, in either of the timelines. I could not relate to her, which probably hindered me from feeling anything for the main character as she went along in her life.
Parental Guidance: 65% Recommend
I would recommend this book 65%. There was a romance, and initimate relationships were implied, although nothing was shown. It was irritating how nonchaleant the main character was about dating and relationships, and that she just let any guy persuade her to do anything. I understand some women are like that, but it did seem out of character for her. Be warned that there is not a great role model.
There was some violence, but nothing graphic or intense. There was also some swearing, although it was not often and did not permeate the whole book.
Be warned that this book does have liberal agenda behind it. I know a lot of books try to teach something, but this one was a little bit more in your face. And this is a spoiler, but I feel must be in the warning, there is an implied abortion that takes place.

Does anyone else think it was weird that Joe was just totally okay with his wife telling his children an epic story about her past love life? I understand that in the end Joe was the hero in the story, but it still seemed odd to me. It is even weirder that he just by while one of his daughters was completely obsessed with his wife’s ex-boyfriend and believing that the ex-boyfriend was her father. If I were Joe, I would have wanted my wife to tell the story sooner. Honestly, poor Joe.
The daughters were pretty lame. And they all agreed. They had no personality. And then their mom says something “offensive” which is just calling someone from her past “crazy”, but apparently that is not politically correct so they correct her and explain to their old mother the appropriate way to talk. I just could not like the daughters.
I also could not like the mom. Her story was boring in both timelines. She just did whatever she was told to do with no desires or drive of her own. Sometimes in these sorts of books I can understand why a character did something that they did because of their past or trauma or desires, but when she voluntarily went to Duke and did stuff in the bathroom at the end? Really? Why did she do that? There was no real reason for her to have done that. Plus, it bothered me that she did not tell her husband that part of her life. She’s been keeping it from him their whole lives. That did not sit well with me.
Oh well, just another author I probably won’t read anymore of.
