Storyline: 5 Stars

This was a great nonfiction book about an incredible story in the famous Berlin 1936 Olympics. I think anyone could enjoy this book. It gave a lot of context for what was happening around the world during that time, even in Germany. I really appreciated the context and I think those that have not ready many nonfiction books around that time would appreciate it. I have read a few nonfiction books in that time period, such as Seabiscuit, Unbroken, and a few nonfiction World War I and II history books, and I loved the context that the book gave.

I found myself holding my breath near the ending races. Even though I knew the outcome of the races, there was still suspense. It makes me wonder how the author was able to get all the information on how each race was raced!

I would definitely recommend this book!

Parental Guidance: 95% Recommend

I would recommend this book 95% of the time for parental guidance. Honestly, there was nothing alarming in it. No swearing, no inappropriate scenes, and no real violence outside of the brief overview of what Germany was doing at the time. Because it is a nonfiction book without much dialogue and the scenes are brief, we don’t get to view the day to day which I think makes the book more appropriate.

The 5% off is for a part where girls are mentioned hollering to boys on the streets and there are a few instances where a character drinks. However, nothing is detailed and it is vague. Plus, the main characters do not partake in anything like that.

*Spoilers Ahead*

I loved this book more than I thought that I would. I will admit, it was a slow start for me. It took me awhile to really care about the characters because the first part of the book was giving context for all the characters. However, but the end I was nearly in tears when Washington won the Olympics!

There were some great characters. I thought Joe was great, and his line about holding a grudge taking too much energy was honestly inspiring. It made me look at myself and think if I am holding any grudges that are taking my energy. However, I probably relate more with Joyce who wanted justice. Which speaking of, I loved their relationship. Joe and Joyce were so faithful to each other, and I thought it was so amazing that they got married the same day that they graduated!

As I noted above, I loved the context that the book gave. I have read several nonfiction books in this time period, and they gave context specifically for the story, but not necessary for the rest of the world or the country. I really appreciated that and it put into context so many other books I have read as well.
