Storyline: 4 Stars

I knew that the Letters of Enchantment Duology was a fantasy, but I was not prepared for this type of fantasy. The world was different than other fantasy books that I have read. There was still advanced technology with the fantasy, and I appreciated that. It was a fresh take on fantasy which I believe is much needed.

I appreciated Iris and Roman and how they were journalists. I appreciated once again that the author was more original and that they weren’t thieves, or in a crime group, or in a new order of fighters in the fantasy world, or heirs of some sort of throne. They were normal people living in a normal town, and that made me love the characters even more.

This is definitely a good read for someone tired of the usual fantasy and wants a fresh take on a fantasy world.

Parental Guidance: 65% Recommend

Right away while reading, there were no red flags. I did not have to knock off any percentage points to my rating until later on in the first book and then into the second book. There were some romantic scenes, although nothing explicit was shared. If you want more details about the romance, see below, but be warned that it could spoil a part of the plot. There were also some rainbow side characters that played a somewhat significant part in both books. There was nothing explicit between them.

The language was very mild throughout the book. There were two swear words by my count in the entire duology. There were some other coarse language, but only two swear words and the harsh language was few and far between.

Overall, I was happy with how clean the book was. I would recommend the book to a teenager, although a parent might feel differently about the rainbow characters.

*Spoilers Ahead*

As I mentioned above, I wanted to clarify that the romantic scenes were when two characters were married. The scene was still not detailed, but I always appreciate when the romance happens after marriage. Nothing more than a kiss is shared before the characters are married.

Alright, for the real talk, I liked Iris and Roman. I appreciated that they found each other through writing because I love writing letters to the people that I love. I also journal everyday and really enjoy writing. I appreciated that the two characters were regular journalists and their time at the front lines was not spent fighting but writing. I always get annoyed when the main teenage characters suddenly are great warriors after barely any training, but it was not the case in this book, outside of Iris weidling a sword in the second book.

I do wish there was a little more. I feel like the world that was created was so interesting and more could have been done with it. Maybe the author plans to write more in the universe, but I wish there had been more. It was a short and sweet fantasy read, but I think the author could have made even more of the world she created.
