In the beginning of the book there were a couple short scenes of intimacy between a couple. It was not graphic and was a few sentences without any details, but they were scenes that I skipped over. Additionally, there is one scene later in the book where intimacy is implied, but it is even less graphic than the beginning.
Violence
With the dust bowl and great depression as themes, there were a few times with violence. Workers wanted to strike which resulted in violence. There were heavy storms and floods and injuries in that regard, but outside of the striking there was not much violence.
Language
There were a few far and between swear words used in the book, but they were easy to forget. Even after reading I don’t remember there being any harsh language.
Drugs and Alcohol
The characters are generally too poor for drugs and alcohol, but wine is drank occasionally throughout.
Diversity
The diversity between characters had more to do with the rich and poor during the Great Depression. There were diverse families and backgrounds and beliefs among the character cast.
Demographic
I would suggest the book to anyone over the age of 16. I would say that the book is targeted towards women with the main characters being women, just like most Kristen Hannah books, but men who enjoy historical fiction may enjoy the novel too.
Storyline
I thought that the story was good but not great. I think I was disappointed because I have loved all the Kristen Hannah books that I have read and this one was just okay. I was not very attached to the characters, and the daughter was annoying. I enjoyed the first third of the book, but I think the second two-thirds was less enjoyable because there were a lot of similarities between The Four Winds and other Dust Bowl/Great Depression books that I have read, including The Grapes of Wrath. It was just okay, but not my favorite Kristen Hannah book.
