Romance

The two narrators are married women, and most of the “on-screen” romance is minima. There are some descriptions of romance in the past, but they are not graphic. There were accusations of s*xual relationships between individuals, but they would fall in the violence category and there is no proof that they actually occurred.

Violence

This book was interesting because although a lot of disturbing things happened, most of it did not happen “on-screen”. There is a pedophile who then marries his victim when she is eighteen, and he is accused of other pedophile relationships that are not proven. Two men are murdered and a young woman nearly dies. A teenager is killed although the book does not confirm how. There was a lot of violence and dysfunctional characters, but a lot of the violence was not confirmed.

Language

There were a few instances of “f*ck” during the heated moments of the book. There may have been a dozen or so of the word. There were other minor swear words throughout the book.

Drugs and Alcohol

One of the characters was an alcoholic who would get very drunk every once in a while and not return home. A few of the characters casually drank with friends or family, but the alcoholic character had the most involvement with alcohol. His drunken state was not described very often and it was seen as a bad trait.

Diversity

There are men and women and different ethnic characters. There is a minor gay character, but because of the unreliable narration, I’m still not sure if the character was actually gay.

Demographic

The book’s targeted audience is adult women, but I would say anyone over the age of 16 would be able to read this book. Because of the pedophilia and language, I would not recommend it to anyone younger.

Storyline

I don’t really understand it, but I was hooked on the book. I kept wanting to know what actually happened. If you read it, you know what I mean. I’ll admit, the ending was somewhat frustrating because there is so much ambiguity around what occurred. I don’t know if I could trust any character. All I know is that the Fair family is messed up and filled with a lot of bad people and a lot of liars.
