There was really no romance in the book. The main character, Molly, has someone that she believes might be interested in her, but it never amounts to anything. By the end of the book she has a love interest, but it is not developed in the book and nothing detailed is described. On a separate note, there are some shady characters in relationships in the book, but there are no romance scenes between them.
Violence
The book centers around a murder, but it is not a graphic murder. There is some violence when the antagonist is revealed, but it is minimal.
Language
The language was not harsh, and I can’t remember there being many swear words. There might be a few small ones here and there, but it was quite mild for language.
Drugs and Alcohol
There are drugs in the book. No one takes them, but a movement of drugs is an integral part of the storyline. One of the characters works at a bar in the hotel.
Diversity
There are different characters with disabilities, ethnicities, and unique characteristics that create a diverse cast of characters. I think that the book did a good job of including a wide array of characters.
Demographic
The book would be appropriate for young adult and adult readers. I would say 12+ would be an appropriate age. I think that the book could be read by both men and women.
Storyline
The Maid was not my favorite book that I had ever read, but I loved the simplicity of it. It reminded me of some of the old-school mystery shows that my parents showed me growing up. It was refreshing to read a mystery that was not graphic or scary. It is a safe read and a good introduction to the mystery genre.
