Romance

There were not any romantic relationships or interests. However, the main character and his friends stay at a house full of women for a night and it is implied that they each spend the night with each of the women. In another scene, the wife of a wounded soldier comes and it is implied that they are intimate. No graphic or explicit details are shared.

Violence

There is a lot of violence with the novel being about World War I. There are dead bodies, shootings, bombings, injuries, blood, gas, and everything else in World War I.

Language

There was some harsh language, but not any intense swear words. There was not much conversation throughout the book for there to be swear words.

Drugs and Alcohol

Because the book is based on World War I there was not much for drugs and alcohol because the soldiers do not have much access to it. However, there are some brief scenes and mentioning of alcohol.

Diversity

There was not much for diversity considering the book is set during World War I. Most of the characters are German soldiers.

Demographic

The book is a classic, and I would recommend it to any high school student. There are some crude and violent themes throughout the book which may not be appropriate for someone younger. The book does a good job of showing the reality of war without being too violent or graphic. Someone who reads the book needs to understand that it is about war and will not be a nice story.

Storyline

All Quiet On The Western Front was a book that I had been wanting to read for a long time but finally got around to. It was a fantastic novel. It portrayed the hopelessness and pointlessness of war without being too graphic. The soldier’s journey was heartbreaking and impactful. It is crazy to think about how young the soldiers were.
