There was not much romance outside of a few scenes of kissing. It was similar to the first book of the series and the love triangle continued. I will warn you that there is a strange scene of everyone playing strip bowling… which made no sense to me. What teenage brothers play a game like that with each other on a regular basis? The romance still annoyed me in this book, so if you think it will get better, you will be disappointed.
Violence
There was hardly any violence in the book. There was even less than in the first book. There were threats and a few times that I thought there may be some, but it never panned out. There was a kidnapping, sure, but it was not very violent.
Language
There were not any harsh swear words similar to the last book in the series. Still some of the conversations made me roll my eyes, but at least there was not swearing.
Drugs and Alcohol
One of the brothers who is a part of the love triangle drinks quite often like in the last book. In this book the other boy in the love triangle also gets drunk for a part. They are both underage and it appears irresponsible when they drink.
Diversity
The same two gay characters are in this book and they have a brief scene of them kissing. It was easy enough to skip over, but if that is something that you would not be able to look past, I would advice not reading the book.
Demographic
The book is for Young Adult readers, which are typically ages 13-18. I would say that would be the appropriate age for the book considering the lack of romance and strong language.
Storyline
To be completely honest, The Hawthorne Legacy bothered me. The concept of the book is great, but the execution was poor. I don’t understand Avery and her love triangle. Neither of them are remotely attractive in personality. Plus, it was annoying that every character had to be related to other characters in some way. It was unrealistic that no one knew about all the relation and connections until this book. There were four brilliant brothers and they never figured out any of the revelations until now. It was a little unbelievable.
